What is a Doula?
Women who are supported by a Birth Doula frequently report a significant decrease in the length of labor, the perception of pain, and the need for analgesia, as well as fewer caesarian sections.
In addition, those women and their partners express a high level of satisfaction with their experience and an enhanced relationship as partners and parents.
A Birth Doula provides ongoing information, emotional and physical support to women before birth, during labor and the birth, and in the period immediately afterward.
The Doula is not a medical person - not a doctor, nurse or midwife. Instead, she is there just for the support of the mother and her partner, if applicable. She can also assist the mother in developing a Birth Plan, and in communication with medical staff.
My own philosophy as a Doula is one of complete respect for the choices made by my clients. Whether you choose to give birth in a hospital, a birth center or at home, with medication or without, I am present to support you in having the birth you desire.
